Route Logic

Start in Chiang Rai when the mist is the prize.

The best start is Chiang Rai because it puts Phu Chi Fa and Doi Pha Tang within realistic pre-dawn reach. Chiang Mai works, but it adds a long transfer day before the border ridge section really begins.

Start from Chiang Rai

Recommended. Better sunrise positioning, less highway fatigue, and more energy for Phu Chi Fa, Doi Pha Tang, and Route 1093.

Start from Chiang Mai

Possible. Add a Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai/Thoeng transfer and keep Day 2 protected for the 6:00 AM viewpoint arrival.

Embedded route

OSRM-routed road geometry projected over Web Mercator satellite imagery, starting in Chiang Rai before the ridge section, Route 1148, Nan, and Chiang Mai.

Mist Forecast Strategy

How to Pick Misty Days

Phu Chi Fa is famous for sunrise and sea of mist. For the best chance, stay near the viewpoint instead of riding from town at 3:00 AM, then arrive 45-60 minutes before sunrise.

Best odds: November to February.

Strong mist chances after a cool night following rain or humid weather.

Look for overnight lows, high humidity, light wind, and clear early-morning skies.

Avoid windy mornings; wind shreds valley fog.

Valleys below viewpoints create the best cloud inversions.

Check Windy, Meteoblue, Thai Meteorological Department, and Google weather the night before.

Ideal signs: humidity 85-100%, wind under 10 km/h, overnight temperature drop, no heavy rain at sunrise.

Blue-hour mist is often better than the sun itself.

Packing

Riding notes that keep the photo plan realistic.

Bike and road

Use an ADV, dual sport, or well-maintained touring scooter 160cc+. Expect steep ridge roads, broken shoulders, cold dawn starts, and slow village sections.

Weather

Carry rain shell, warm layer, dry bag, clear visor, and a headlamp. Fog and dew can be heavy on Phu Chi Fa, Doi Pha Tang, Doi Phu Kha, and Doi Samer Dao.

Pace

Keep Day 4 and Day 6 modest. Route 1148 and Doi Samer Dao both reward waiting for light more than adding kilometers.
